All the three European airline groups were initially part of the process, and Air France-KLM and Lufthansa Group were the two chosen for the last round, and the government has accepted Lufthansa bid of €1.2B for 44.9% stake in the airline.
The Prime Minister of Portugal disclosed during a press conference that Lufthansa’s bid was 16% higher than Air France-KLM’s.
This also means the airline will stay in the Star Alliance, as the other option would have eventually meant a transition to SkyTeam.
The Portuguese state will retain a 50.1% stake in the airline, while employees can hold up to 5%, and Lufthansa can hold between 44.9% and 49.9%, depending on whether employees exercise their right to buy shares.
Nothing will change until early 2028, as the deal is expected to take more than a year to secure the required approvals.
